There is absolutely no better place to really make a great bird dog than the prairie. All of the greatest trainers and amateurs alike have gone there since modern transportation has allowed them. They first came by rail and now some even fly to maximize their time on the ground. There is just no substitute for the lessons taught by wild birds. Here the dogs learn where to find them and how to use the wind to their advantage while figuring out their 'distance'. They also learn their role in the partnership; how to swing to the front and go with the handler and to keep the birds properly located for him to produce for the shot. A dog that has been taught all of the proper fundamentals prior to the trip is the one best prepared to take advantage of the many opportunities out here. Without the solid foundation of basic obedience in place, little can be accomplished. It is a long trip just to get frustrated. Do your home work prior to leaving.

WaterLots of clean water is critical for both handler and dogs. This is a dry country and can be very hot in the late summer by mid morning. Cool clean water must be available for the dogs at all times and when they need it while running. Training days begin with the first light.

FitnessTo make the most of your time spent here, you must have a dog in good shape! If they are not when you start - the trip will be of little value to all. The prairie will break down those not prepared in short order. A well conditioned athlete on a premium feed diet will be one that maximizes the time and opportunities afforded.

Good Horses
Experienced and safe horses are a must to be able to make the most of your time. You can get your green horse some excellent experience in the long days here - but, they must have the fundamentals at a minimum. Trying to break both horses and dogs in the same brace frequently ends with a broken handler!
